Bankroll Management: The Skill That Separates Winners
Ask any successful bettor what matters most and few will say "picking winners". The real edge is bankroll management — how you protect and stake your money over time. Even a great tipping record can be wiped out by reckless staking.
Set a dedicated bankroll
Your bankroll is money set aside purely for betting — an amount you can afford to lose without affecting your daily life. Never bet with rent, bills or borrowed money.
Use the unit system
Instead of betting random amounts, split your bankroll into units. A common approach is:
- 1 unit = 1–2% of your total bankroll.
- Standard picks: stake 1 unit.
- Highest-confidence picks: stake 2–3 units — never your whole bankroll.
With a €1,000 bankroll, one unit is €10–€20. This keeps you in the game through inevitable losing runs.
Never chase losses
Chasing — doubling stakes to "win back" a loss — is the fastest way to empty a bankroll. Losing streaks are normal even with a high win rate. Stick to your unit size and trust the long game.
Track everything
Record every bet: selection, stake, odds and result. Over time this shows which markets are actually profitable for you and keeps your decisions honest.
Discipline beats intuition. A disciplined bettor with average tips will usually outlast an undisciplined one with great tips.
